Private Hamp is a nonentity, a simple minded Lancashire man who has endured four years of the carnage of war. When one day he walks away from the battle, the army takes notice and Hamp is court-martialled for desertion.
His guards, the officer defending him and the Padre all try to make Hamp realise the court could impose a death sentence but Hamp has utter faith in his counsel and that the army will not bother with the likes of him.
With themes of the consequences of battle on an individual and the overwhelming logic of the rule of martial law, John Wilson's powerful and tragic play, including a classic courtroom drama, will leave audiences stunned and deeply moved.
